Using links to drive traffic to your web site.

I was asked that by a fellow blogger in a link exchange with my site. I thought the subject too complex to explain in his comments box, so I decided to post it here.

Links are good for any sites, be it a new website or an established one. Why? Bcause it's your number 1 way of generating and increasing the traffic to your website. Be it your google pagerank, your search engine position or even your alexa ratings, everything depends on how many sites link to you. Think of your site as yourself. How many people know you? And how many people can link to you? Lets say I'm not linked to my neighbour next door. Should anyone ask him "do you know any artist nearby?", he would point to some sod next street, isntead of saying, hey there's this chap next door who's an artist. Now imagine if everyone in your town/city was linked to you... or even the state. As more people know you and point to you, the more visits and fame you'll get. Thats what links give your site, fame and visits.

So know that we know that you need links to your site, what do you do?

To start off, create or buy good quality information or articles to be put on your site. The web pages should be easy on the eye, not too cluttered and they should also attract the users. Now that you have content, lets get links-

-Build a relationship with other sites: This involves exchanging links. This actually may take a lot of time, even more than creating content. But target the right site, and you could get lots of hits.

-Know sites like digg and stumbleupon which people post new stories/cool sites? Use them. I get some 200 hits from Digg.com at my blogs weekly, as every article I post is linked at digg.

-Buy links: The links you purchase should be on sites which compliment your site's theme. For ranking the sites, Google and several other search engines compare the available content on different sites. So which means, do not put up a link from link farms.

-Now a tip on link farms: These links are not taken into consideration by most of the search engines. You may also be penalized for using these links.

-Remember what I said about having a good site? The kind that people link to in forums and communities? Well, those links come on their own, just get good content and people will come.

Wish the best of luck.
